WAYMO ROBOTAXI ALERTS POLICE TO ARMED PASSENGERS

In early September, two teenagers were arrested after police found a loaded AR-style ghost gun in a Waymo robotaxi in Los Angeles. Waymo detected what it called "a violation of our terms of service involving a firearm," stopped the vehicle, and contacted law enforcement, according to the Los Angeles Times. The arrests expose a gap in public understanding about how autonomous vehicles monitor passengers and what data they collect. Questions remain unanswered: How did Waymo detect the firearm? What exactly constitutes their terms of service violation? Who has access to recorded surveillance? The incident highlights the surveillance capabilities embedded in robotaxis operating in major cities. As autonomous vehicles expand their presence, the balance between public safety, passenger privacy, and corporate oversight has become a critical issue. Regulators and companies have not yet established clear guidelines on when—or if—autonomous vehicles should act as extensions of law enforcement.
