The streaming giant is cracking down on fake performers flooding its platform with AI-generated music. Artists identified as AI personas will receive a visible badge on their profile and track listings, signaling to listeners that they "do not represent a real person."
Spotify will use a combination of human review and AI tools to identify AI personas, rather than relying solely on self-disclosure. Creators can voluntarily label their work as AI-generated starting immediately, but the platform will independently verify claims.
The move addresses a growing issue: the proliferation of low-effort, AI-generated tracks uploaded to streaming services. By excluding these artists from algorithmic playlists, personalized recommendations, and editorial selections, Spotify aims to reduce their discoverability while maintaining transparency for users who encounter them.
While AI personas will be labeled and deprioritized in recommendations, Spotify is not removing them entirely. Users can still search for and listen to AI-generated music directly if they choose. The policy balances the emerging creator tool of AI music generation with protections for human artists competing for listener attention.
The labeling system comes as music platforms grapple with balancing innovation and artist protection. Spotify's approach differs from complete removal, instead emphasizing transparency and algorithmic demotion—allowing AI music to exist on the platform while limiting its promotional reach.
