Nvidia announced the RTX Spark, an Arm-based chip family designed for Windows laptops and mini-PCs, marking the company's entry into the consumer PC processor market alongside Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm. The chip will power Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra, launching this fall.
Nvidia claims RTX Spark is "the most efficient PC chip ever built," according to senior director of product management Mark Aeve. The Arm-based processor represents a significant shift for the GPU maker, which has traditionally focused on graphics and AI acceleration rather than complete computing systems.
Developed in partnership with MediaTek, RTX Spark will debut in Microsoft's Surface Laptop Ultra and a new Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. Both devices target local AI development, equipped with 128GB of unified memory designed for on-device machine learning tasks.
The Surface Laptop Ultra represents Microsoft's second attempt at Arm-based computing. The company previously wrote off $900 million on its original Surface, which also relied on an Arm-based Nvidia chip. This new partnership suggests confidence from both companies that the market conditions have shifted.
RTX Spark positions itself as a competitor to existing thin-and-light Windows machines, claiming performance that meets or exceeds current offerings.
