Comcast is converting millions of Xfinity routers into motion sensors through a software update rolling out today. The feature comes free to owners of XB7 and newer gateways.
The motion-sensing capability arrives via an update to the Xfinity Internet app, part of Comcast's new Xfinity Shield service. Compatible routers can now monitor activity throughout your home and send notifications to your phone.
The technology leverages existing hardware already installed in customer homes, requiring no additional equipment purchases. Xfinity gateways XB7 and newer support the feature.
Comcast has not yet detailed how the motion detection works technically or specified which activities trigger alerts. The company also did not address privacy considerations surrounding always-on motion monitoring in residential spaces.
The rollout represents another example of ISPs adding smart home capabilities to their networking equipment. Comcast's move gives its router hardware dual functionality as both connectivity devices and home monitoring tools.
