ADVOCACY GROUPS PUSH FTC TO PROBE ROBLOX SPENDING

The National Center on Sexual Exploitation and Fairplay filed the request citing concerns over game design features that the groups say manipulate children into making unreasonable in-app purchases. Roblox, one of the world's largest user-generated content gaming platforms with millions of young players, has faced scrutiny over its monetization practices. The platform uses a virtual currency system that enables spending on avatar customization, game passes, and other digital items. The advocacy groups argue that specific mechanics—potentially including limited-time offers, social pressure elements, and reward structures—are designed to drive spending rather than serve gameplay. They claim these practices disproportionately target children who may lack judgment about financial decisions. An FTC investigation would examine whether Roblox's practices violate consumer protection laws or the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Roblox has not yet responded to the request. The platform previously stated it implements safeguards for younger users, including spending limits and parental controls.
